Zhang Fuqin, director of the China Petroleum Planning Institute’s Institute of Refining and Chemicals, said that China’s ethylene industry will vigorously develop 800,000 to 1 million tons of equipment. It is estimated that in 2010 China's ethylene demand will be 25 to 26 million tons, while its production capacity will be 14 million tons, which can only meet the demand of 55%; in 2020, the ethylene demand will reach 37 million to 41 million tons, with a production capacity of 23 million.
