In China, drivers often see their cars as an extension of their homes, which is why engineers at the Delphi China Technology Center developed a specialized DVD audio system tailored for local consumers. This innovation has now become an integral part of Delphi’s global product development chain.
Over time, Chinese engineers have not only created products that suit the domestic market but are also beginning to design solutions for global audiences. Companies like Delphi are looking to position their China technology center as a crucial player in their worldwide operations. With growing technical capabilities, Delphi aims to make this center the largest electronics research hub globally, having invested $50 million to support its expansion.
Douglas Brandt, head of business planning for electronic and security systems at Delphi China, noted, “The ability to map images in China is very advanced.†Chinese consumers now enjoy a full range of services, including comprehensive design, authorization, and testing. Joseph Zachariah, director of management at the center, added, “Our team has grown significantly in these areas.â€
In recent years, 350 engineers at the center have collaborated with colleagues in Singapore and India to develop new automotive technologies. By 2010, a new laboratory will be established, employing around 1,400 people, two-thirds of whom will be engineers. While the center’s work on global products is still limited, it has already made progress in image mapping. A small team of 15 in Shanghai is focused on promoting the use of global electronic components, while Chinese engineers are working on a model applicable to both China and India.
Zachariah, who has led the Delphi India Technology Center for five years, mentioned that India serves as a model for China. In India, 2,500 engineers collaborate with Delphi’s global headquarters, mainly handling simulation experiments and software analysis. Although Delphi China’s engineers haven’t yet started on foundational vehicle design, Brandt admits that the fast growth of the Chinese auto market has made them essential for maintaining Delphi’s competitive edge.
The rapid pace of new model development has given Chinese engineers a critical role—speed is key in today’s business environment, according to Brandt. “Speed is everything in business,†he said.
