China's automobile design has become a global trend

In China, drivers often see their cars as an extension of their homes. Recognizing this unique perspective, engineers at the Delphi China Technology Center developed a specialized DVD audio system tailored for local consumers. This innovation has now become an integral part of Delphi’s global product development chain. Over the years, Chinese engineers have not only created products that meet domestic market needs but are also increasingly contributing to global solutions. Companies like Delphi aim to position their China technology center as a key player in the company's worldwide network. With growing technical capabilities, Delphi is investing heavily, with over $50 million allocated to expand the center’s role. The goal is to make it the largest electronics research hub under Delphi globally. Douglas Brandt, head of business planning for electronic and security systems at Delphi China, remarked, “The ability to map images in China is very strong.” He added that Chinese consumers now enjoy a full range of services, from design to testing. Joseph Zachariah, director of management at the center, noted that the team has grown significantly and is now fully capable of handling comprehensive projects. In recent years, 350 engineers at the center have collaborated with teams in Singapore and India to develop new automotive technologies. Looking ahead, by 2010, a new laboratory will be completed, employing around 1,400 people, two-thirds of whom will be engineers. While the center currently focuses on global products, it also plays a role in developing components for international use. A small team in Shanghai is working on a model that can be used in both China and India. Zachariah, who has led the Delphi Technology Center in India for five years, mentioned that India serves as a model for China. In India, 2,500 engineers work alongside Delphi’s global headquarters, focusing mainly on simulation and software analysis. Although Chinese engineers haven’t yet started basic vehicle design work, Brandt admits that the fast-paced growth of the Chinese auto market has made them essential to maintaining Delphi’s competitive edge. Speed, according to Brandt, is crucial in today’s business environment. “Speed is everything,” he said, highlighting how the rapid development of new models has given Chinese engineers a vital role in keeping up with global demands.
