Wheeling fire at 165 Hintz Rd 10-12-12

The Wheeling Fire Department responded to a shed fire on Friday evening along Hintz Road near the railroad tracks. Units from Station 23 were dispatched after receiving a report of a header, and they were directed to an asphalt contractor's yard just east of the MABAS Readiness Center, adjacent to the railroad. Photos from Larry Shapiro capture the scene as Engine 23 positioned itself to supply water to firefighters while waiting for a full supply line to be charged. Additional attack lines were stretched as crews worked to contain the flames, which had spread from the shed to nearby wood pallets and threatened a truck carrying a tank of tar. Engine 23 requested Squad 24 with a pump-and-roll unit to assist in a rapid attack, while Engine 24 laid several hundred feet of large-diameter hose (LDH) to connect to a hydrant on the neighboring property. The fire was located in a tight, hazardous area, making the operation more complex. Squad 24 used its remote-controlled bumper turret to keep the fire at bay, protecting the tar-filled truck. Multiple engines were on scene, each with several lines deployed to manage the blaze. The crew worked carefully to cool the tank and hold the fire until a continuous water supply was established.
