Historic 5-11 Alarm fire with multiple LODD in Chicago, 2-7-68

This is from Steve Redick:

Another well-known and tragic event. A gasoline tanker leaked and caught fire in an alley at 801 W. 49th Place, at Mickelberry Food Products. The fire led to a massive explosion that killed four firefighters and several civilians. My dad was part of the SS3 unit and responded to the call. He often shared with me the harrowing experience of wading through waist-deep water, covered in gasoline in the basement, while shutting off utilities as instructed. He always said they were lucky no one was injured during this operation—and that they shouldn’t have been down there in the first place. This happened well after the initial explosion; they arrived later in the fire. You can listen to the audio recording here.
