Excerpts from the KaneCountyChronicle.com:
The Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District Board is set to make a key leadership decision at a special meeting on Tuesday, August 25. The board is expected to appoint a new chief of operations, a role that will focus specifically on the daily management and coordination of the district’s two fire stations.
Board President Jim Gaffney explained that this new position isn’t meant to replace Chief Greg Benson, who has been in his role since the district was established in 2011. Instead, the chief of operations will be responsible for overseeing station operations and ensuring that all daily tasks are carried out efficiently. “We want to separate these roles to streamline our efforts and improve performance,†Gaffney said.
Gaffney hasn’t yet revealed the name of the individual being appointed, but he confirmed that the person will be introduced during the meeting, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Station 3, located at 34W500 Carl Lee Road in St. Charles Township. The agenda also includes approving the new chief’s contract.
The newly appointed chief of operations is expected to begin their duties on Wednesday, according to Gaffney.
In addition to the station in St. Charles Township, the district operates another station along Route 64 in Campton Hills. Together, the two stations serve approximately 25,000 residents across 38 square miles, covering areas such as Wayne, Campton Hills, and St. Charles Township.
Greg Benson, the long-serving chief of the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District, is set to retire by the end of October, according to an official announcement made by the district on Wednesday. Benson has led the department since its formation in 2011, when it transitioned from being a paper district that relied on services from the city of St. Charles.
As part of the leadership transition, the district has named Carl DeLeo as the new chief of operations. DeLeo will be responsible for managing station operations, firefighter safety, and overall day-to-day activities, according to Board President Jim Gaffney. He noted that the title was chosen to allow for potential future flexibility, such as hiring someone solely for administrative duties.
DeLeo brings over three decades of experience to the role, having served as a captain in the Lisle/Woodridge Fire Protection District before retiring. His background in both operational and leadership capacities makes him a strong fit for the new position.
