Today in Highland Park
Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:
This Saturday, the City of Highland Park and the Highland Park Fire Department will be hosting a special Memorial Day blood drive to support Kylia Abbott, the young daughter of firefighter Nathan Abbott, as she continues her battle against stage four neuroblastoma. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fire Station #33, located at 1130 Central Ave.
Kylia was diagnosed with this rare form of cancer shortly after her one-year checkup in January 2014. Neuroblastoma is a type of cancer that develops in nerve tissue, often found in the adrenal glands, neck, chest, or spinal cord. Her treatment at the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital has been intense, requiring nearly 20 blood transfusions over the course of her care.
The Abbott family has received incredible support from Nathan's colleagues at the fire department, many of whom have given up their own time to help the family during this difficult period. This is the second year in a row that the Highland Park Fire Department has organized a blood drive on Memorial Day to honor Kylia and support her fight.
Nathan Abbott, a former U.S. Marine who earned the Purple Heart during Operation Iraqi Freedom, has always been a dedicated public servant. For his fellow firefighters, organizing this blood drive on such a meaningful day is a powerful way to show their support for a brother in need.
"We are in the business of service—both to our community and to each other," said Highland Park Fire Chief Dan Pease. "This is our way of helping a fellow firefighter and his family through one of the toughest times of their lives."
Kylia’s grandmother shared how vital blood donations have been in Kylia’s journey. "The blood transfusions were essential in keeping her strong enough to go through her stem cell transplant. They helped her stay alert and gave her the strength to keep fighting," she explained.
If you're interested in donating blood, appointments are encouraged but not required. You can schedule your donation by calling LifeSource at (877) 543-3768 or visiting www.lifesource.org and using group code 344D.
Thanks, Dan
