Engine 126 arrived at 7733 S. South Shore Drive just before 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon and found a fire on the third floor of a five-story apartment building. The fire was quickly contained within less than 10 minutes, as it had spread to the unit directly above the original fire location. Residents on the fourth floor were calling for help, showing signs of distress. Firefighters evacuated people through the basement garage and also from a third-floor window in the front of the building. A dog was rescued from the fire floor and given chest compressions and oxygen in an attempt to revive it, but the efforts were unsuccessful. One resident was taken to the hospital with minor smoke inhalation from a neighboring apartment. Locals later mentioned that there were no working smoke detectors on the floor where the fire started.
It's always alarming to see such incidents, especially when they involve both people and pets. The quick response from the firefighters is commendable, but the lack of smoke detectors on the affected floor raises serious concerns about safety. It’s a reminder of how important it is for residents to have working smoke alarms in their homes. We hope the affected families are recovering well and that this incident serves as a wake-up call for others to check their smoke detection systems.
