Excerpts from the Chicago Tribune:
Firefighters rescued a 6-year-old boy and a man after a fire broke out in a two-flat in Oak Park overnight. The two were found unconscious inside one of the apartments. The boy was taken to Loyola University Medical Center, while the man was transported to West Suburban Medical Center.
Oak Park Fire Chief Thomas Ebsen reported that both individuals were responsive, but their current conditions remain undisclosed. Crews arrived at the scene around 11:30 p.m. on North Humphrey Avenue and discovered the entire back of the building "totally engulfed in flames," according to Ebsen.
John Dansby described how he started knocking on the door, soon joined by other neighbors. Julius White Sr., who lives nearby, said about five or six residents rushed to the home to assist. They were told three people lived on the second floor, and one man managed to break through the window to reach the upper level.
"We went upstairs, and they were still asleep," Dansby said. "It was extremely smoky. I've never seen anything like it before."
A woman managed to escape, but the boy and the man were trapped inside. Due to the heavy smoke, neighbors and police couldn't reach them, as confirmed by Ebsen. The fire quickly spread to an adjacent building as firefighters worked to save the two.
"Because we spent time on the rescue, the fire really got a foothold," Ebsen explained. "Both buildings are old wood-frame structures, so the fire spread very quickly. Unfortunately, it looks like both will be a total loss. The roofs collapsed on both buildings."
The fire was escalated to a second alarm, with companies from nine different fire departments responding. Around 40 firefighters were on the scene, and the fire was finally brought under control about an hour after the initial call.
