Firefighters rescued a 6-year-old boy and an adult man after a fire broke out in a two-flat residence in Oak Park overnight. The two were found unconscious inside one of the apartments. The boy was taken to Loyola University Medical Center, while the man was transported to West Suburban Medical Center.
Oak Park Fire Chief Thomas Ebsen confirmed both individuals were responsive, though their current conditions remain undisclosed. Emergency crews arrived at the scene around 11:30 p.m. on North Humphrey Avenue, where they discovered the entire back of the building "totally engulfed in flames," according to Ebsen.
John Dansby reported that he began knocking on the door and was soon joined by several neighbors. Julius White Sr., who lives just a few doors away, said about five or six residents rushed to the scene to assist. They were told three people lived on the second floor, and one man managed to break through the window leading up to it.
"We went upstairs, and they were still asleep," Dansby said. "It was extremely smoky. I’ve never seen anything like that before."
A woman managed to escape the fire, but the boy and the man were trapped inside. Due to the heavy smoke, firefighters and police were unable to reach them initially, as reported by Ebsen. The fire quickly spread to a neighboring building as crews worked to save the two.
"Because we spent time on the rescue, the fire got a strong hold," Ebsen explained. "Both buildings are old wood-frame structures, so the fire spread very quickly. Unfortunately, it looks like both will be a total loss. The roofs collapsed on both structures."
The fire department escalated the response to a second alarm, bringing in units from nine different departments. Approximately 40 firefighters were on the scene, and the blaze was eventually brought under control about an hour after the initial arrival.
