Buffalo Grove to Sponsor Breast Cancer Awareness Tour

The latest piece from today's Daily Herald highlights the commendable efforts of Buffalo Grove firefighter Steve Rusin and the entire department in supporting breast cancer awareness through their participation in the Pink Heals Tour. As you can see in the accompanying image, a pink fire truck stands out vividly, capturing the attention of many who stop to sign their names in support. It’s a poignant reminder of the community spirit and solidarity that these initiatives foster. In a refreshing twist from the traditional red associated with fire departments, Buffalo Grove has embraced the color pink. This shift isn't just symbolic; it reflects the department’s dedication to raising awareness about cancer in women. Over the months of September and October, Buffalo Grove firefighters, alongside village employees and officials, will don pink shirts emblazoned with the Pink Heals Tour logo. These shirts serve as a visible testament to their commitment to spreading awareness nationwide. This year, Steve Rusin, a firefighter-paramedic, will take on the role of guiding one of the pink fire trucks as part of the tour. The Pink Heals Tour, now in its 2010 edition, begins its journey on August 18th and concludes on October 31st. Key events include a display of the pink trucks at the Fire Chiefs Conference in Chicago from August 27th to 29th. Locally, residents of Buffalo Grove and neighboring towns can witness the trucks on September 1st, just before the annual charity softball game between the village and the Buffalo Grove Area Chamber of Commerce. The Pink Heals Tour was originally conceived by Dave Graybill, an Arizona firefighter, who started with a single pink fire truck. Over time, this initiative has grown significantly, with the current fleet collecting over 38,000 signatures from survivors and their loved ones. Last year, Steve Rusin initiated a small fundraiser within the department to sell 30 T-shirts. Much to his surprise, the campaign exceeded all expectations, raising $2,500 after selling more than 400 shirts. The funds were donated to the Wellness Place in Palatine, a local cancer support center. This year, Rusin is continuing his efforts, offering both T-shirts and sweatshirts with hoods, available on the village's official website. Local firefighter Frank Doll has added a unique touch by incorporating the Buffalo Grove logo into the design. Rusin shared his thoughts on the changing perception within the fire service. "People often think of firefighters as tough guys, but the pink T-shirt idea has been embraced wholeheartedly. It shows that even in traditionally male-dominated fields like firefighting, there’s room for compassion and support." At the recent village board meeting, Fire Chief Terry Vavra expressed his admiration for Rusin’s dedication. He emphasized the sacrifices made by Rusin’s family, noting that they have willingly given up their loved one for a week as he drives one of the pink trucks across the southern United States. Overall, this initiative not only raises awareness about breast cancer but also strengthens community bonds, showcasing how small actions can lead to significant change.
