Congressman Daniel Lipinski has introduced a bill to honor the memory of CFD Captain Herbie Johnson by renaming a local post office. According to his website, U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski (IL-3) has proposed H.R. 3085, which aims to rename the Mount Greenwood Post Office in Chicago after Captain Herbert “Herbie†Johnson. A dedicated firefighter for 32 years, Johnson passed away last year while responding to a house fire on the South Side.
“Captain Herbie Johnson served with incredible courage and selflessness,†said Rep. Lipinski. “His death was a great loss, but this legislation ensures that his legacy will live on in the community he loved.â€
Captain Johnson was deeply connected to the Southwest Side of Chicago, especially the Mount Greenwood, Beverly, and Morgan Park neighborhoods. He was known for his kindness, leadership, and community involvement. Every year, he would lead a fire truck through Western Avenue during the South Side Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade. In 2007, he was awarded the Illinois Medal of Honor for rescuing children from a burning apartment.
On November 2, 2012, Captain Johnson lost his life while fighting a fire in the attic of a home in Englewood. He was 54 years old. He is survived by his wife, Susan, and their three children: Thomas, Michael, and Laurie.
After the tragedy, Rep. Lipinski worked closely with the family, local leaders, and the Chicago Fire Department to find a meaningful way to honor Johnson’s service. The bill proposes to rename the Mount Greenwood Post Office at 3349 W. 111th Street as the "Captain Herbert Johnson Memorial Post Office Building."
A member of a family of public servants, Captain Johnson had several brothers who were also firefighters and police officers. His career took him throughout Chicago, but his heart always belonged to the Southwest Side.
"Herbie was more than just a firefighter—he was a friend, a leader, and a true community figure," said Alderman Matt O’Shea of the 19th Ward. "This recognition is a fitting tribute to his life and service."
Beyond his firefighting duties, Johnson was an instructor at the Robert J. Quinn Fire Academy, where he trained over 1,000 recruits. After 9/11, he volunteered in New York City, and he supported various charitable causes, including the Bucks for Burn Camp, which helps children with burn injuries.
Support for the bill comes from the International Association of Fire Fighters, and a copy of the legislation and a letter of support are available for review.
