Congressman Daniel Lipinski has introduced a bill to honor the legacy of Chicago Fire Captain Herbie Johnson by renaming a local post office in his memory. According to Lipinski’s official website, the legislation—H.R. 3085—aims to rename the Mount Greenwood Post Office after Captain Herbert “Herbie†Johnson, a dedicated firefighter who died while on duty.
Captain Johnson, a 32-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department and a long-time resident of Morgan Park, passed away last year during a house fire on the city’s South Side. His death sparked an outpouring of support from the community, which inspired Lipinski to take action. "Capt. Herbie Johnson served with incredible courage and selflessness," said Lipinski. "His sacrifice reminds us of the bravery and dedication of all first responders. This bill ensures that he will never be forgotten."
Known for his outgoing personality and deep connection to the Southwest Side, Captain Johnson was a beloved figure in the Mount Greenwood, Beverly, and Morgan Park neighborhoods. He was a regular participant in the South Side Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade, often driving the fire truck down Western Avenue. In 2007, he received the Illinois Medal of Honor for rescuing children from a burning apartment.
On November 2, 2012, Captain Johnson lost his life while fighting a fire in the attic of a home in the Englewood neighborhood. He was 54 years old and is survived by his wife, Susan, two sons, Thomas and Michael, and a daughter, Laurie.
Following his passing, Lipinski worked closely with the family, local leaders, and the Chicago Fire Department to find a meaningful way to commemorate his service. The proposed legislation would rename the Mount Greenwood Post Office at 3349 W. 111th Street as the "Captain Herbert Johnson Memorial Post Office Building."
A proud member of a family of public servants, Captain Johnson had three brothers who were Chicago police officers, one sister who retired from the force, and another brother who was also a firefighter. Throughout his career, he served in nearly every neighborhood in Chicago but always felt most at home on the Southwest Side.
"Herbie Johnson was a true leader and a cherished friend," said Alderman Matt O’Shea of the 19th Ward. "Thanks to Congressman Lipinski’s efforts, his memory will live on in our hearts and in the name of this post office."
Beyond his firefighting duties, Captain Johnson was deeply involved in training and mentoring. He trained over 1,000 recruits at the Robert J. Quinn Fire Academy and volunteered in New York City following the 9/11 attacks. He also supported local charities, including the Bucks for Burn Camp, which helps children who have suffered burns.
The bill includes a letter of support from the International Association of Fire Fighters, highlighting the importance of recognizing those who serve with such dedication. This initiative is not just about renaming a building—it's about honoring a man who gave everything for his community.
