More on the 3-alarm fatal fire in Bensenville, November 19, 2017

I arrived at this incident a week ago. The call started as a fire alarm and quickly escalated to a full response before the fire department even arrived. There was one civilian fatality, likely from the apartment where the fire originated. When I got there, the flames were already in the attic and spreading through the structure. One of the biggest challenges was the water supply—local mains are small in that area.The smoke conditions were intense and constantly shifting, making it difficult to get a clear picture of the fire’s progression. From a firefighter's perspective, this was a unique event. It marked the first use of the brand-new Bensenville Fire Department rearmount E-One quint and also the debut of Chicago Fire Department Squad 7’s Snorkel unit.Squad 7 is based out of Rescue Station 3 at O'Hare Airport and covers the northwest side of the city, as well as responding to MABAS alarms in surrounding suburbs. Their rig is one of only four squad units ordered, and it stands out with its lime green color.
