Wheeling fire at 165 Hintz Rd 10-12-12

The Wheeling Fire Department responded to a shed fire on Friday evening along Hintz Road near the railroad tracks. Units from Station 23 were dispatched after receiving a report of a "header," which led them to an asphalt contractor’s yard east of the MABAS Readiness Center, close to the railroad. The scene quickly became complex, with flames spreading to wood pallets and threatening a nearby truck containing a tank filled with tar. Engine 23 arrived first and found the fire in the yard adjacent to the shed, which had already spread to the pallets and was getting dangerously close to the tar-filled truck. They called for Squad 24, equipped with a pump-and-roll system, to assist with a rapid attack. Meanwhile, Engine 24 laid several hundred feet of LDH (large diameter hose) from the yard to a hydrant on the neighboring property to establish a continuous water supply. Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, was on the scene and captured several key moments. One image showed Engine 23 supplying water to firefighters while they waited for the main line to be charged. Another highlighted Squad 24 using a remote-controlled bumper turret to keep the fire at bay and protect the tar tank. Additional photos depicted the challenging environment, with the fire located in a densely packed area surrounded by hazardous materials. As the operation continued, crews worked to control the flames and keep the tar tank cool until the water supply was fully established. A long hose lay was visible as Engine 24 connected to the hydrant just outside the MABAS Readiness Center, which once housed the Wheeling Public Works Department.
