Site Bite: Measuring OEM coils for replacement at the Defense Finance & Accounting Service.

**Site Bite: Measuring OEM Coils for Replacement at the Defense Finance & Accounting Service** Join Jack Kessler, our intern extraordinaire, as he heads to Limestone, Maine, to assist in measuring large air handler coils for replacement at the Defense Finance & Accounting Service (DFAS). This was no ordinary task — it involved measuring over 25 aging coils, many of which had been in service for more than 30 years. Working under the guidance of our experienced Account Manager, James Filauro, I gained the confidence and technical knowledge needed to complete this project. The goal was to measure and replicate original equipment manufacturer (OEM) coils that were showing signs of wear, such as rust, corrosion, and potential leaks. These older cast iron headers were not only inefficient but also prone to failure, risking water damage and poor air quality. One of the key upgrades we planned was replacing the steel headers with higher-grade copper ones. Copper is known for its superior durability, efficiency, and resistance to corrosion. It also helps prevent mold and mildew buildup, which can lead to unpleasant odors and reduced indoor air quality. Plus, copper is easier to repair using a brazing rod, unlike steel, which is often difficult or even impossible to fix effectively. During the site visit, I followed best practices, including taking precise header-to-header measurements, connection center-to-center dimensions, and carefully documenting everything in my workbook. After a few units, I started noticing patterns in the coil fin heights and lengths, which allowed me to match duplicate coils without needing to fully measure each one again. By the end of the day, I had measured over 25 coils and was ready to return to the office to finalize the designs and create detailed CAD drawings. This experience was a major milestone in my career, and I’m proud to have played a role in such an important project. At Nationwide Coils, we maintain one of the largest and most comprehensive coil drawing databases in the industry. Whether you need to replace an old coil or design a custom one, we’ve got the expertise and resources to help. Reach out to us anytime for a quote. Written by: Jack Kessler Intern, Nationwide Coils
