Here’s a story from the March 18, 1975 edition of the Waukegan News-Sun. It details a series of fires that broke out in an apartment complex located just across the street from the old downtown Waukegan Fire Station. The cause was traced back to a failure in the building’s gas distribution system, which led to multiple fires igniting at once throughout the structure. Firefighters from Waukegan responded with their Hi-Ranger Snorkel and a vintage Seagrave aerial ladder truck from the mid-1950s—a 85-foot, three-section ladder. The photos were captured by News-Sun photographer Don Martin. It's hard to imagine these firefighters are still active today—they must have long since retired! A great piece of local history.
