Vintage CFD fire photos – 2

More images from Bill Friedrich’s collection capturing a fire at an 'EL' station in 1962. These photos offer a glimpse into one of the most significant incidents in Chicago’s transit history, showing the destruction caused by a blaze that engulfed a CTA station and trapped a train on the North-South Route. The fire occurred on October 17, 1962, at the Tech-35th station. It severely damaged the platform level, including the newly built island platform and the old northbound platform. The fire also trapped a train, with cars 6453 and 6454 suffering extensive damage. Car 6453 was so badly damaged that it was retired just over a year later, on April 5, 1963. Its mate, 6454, was later renumbered as 6721 and paired with 6722 (formerly 6310) for testing the Automatic Train Control system. Service between Cermak and Indiana was suspended for four days following the incident, which became the worst rapid transit fire in Chicago up to that point. After the fire, the station was temporarily reopened using the old southbound platform and a new temporary northbound side platform. The mezzanine was repaired and reopened soon after. A year later, on April 8, 1963, the station was converted from an “A” to an “AB” station, meaning all trains would stop there. Three weeks later, a new temporary island platform opened on the south side of 35th Street, leading to the closure of the old southbound and temporary northbound platforms. A permanent station was eventually constructed on the north side of 35th Street. In June 1965, a new $500,000 station opened, replacing the structures destroyed in the 1962 fire and the temporary facilities that had been in place since then. The new station featured a tan brick station house on the north side of 35th Street, along with curved canopies over the entrance. These historic photographs, taken by an unknown photographer, provide a powerful visual record of the event and the aftermath, preserving a moment in Chicago's transportation history.
