Two men lost their lives in a hazardous materials incident near Des Plaines, according to officials who confirmed their identities on Friday morning. The victims were identified as Hong Kyqkim, 53, and John Tae Kim, 83. Both resided in a townhouse located on the 9400 block of Harrison Street, where the emergency was reported around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
A woman living in the same home was hospitalized in critical condition, while four sheriff’s deputies who responded to the call experienced respiratory issues and were treated at a hospital before being released. A relative of the victims had called 911 earlier that afternoon, reporting three people in distress. Upon arrival, first responders found the two men deceased at the scene, as confirmed by Richard Dobrowski, chief of the North Maine Fire Protection District.
The woman remained in critical condition late Thursday night, according to a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office. Authorities evacuated the entire townhouse complex but later allowed most residents to return. The area was eventually reopened to traffic. The complex is situated near Potter Road in unincorporated Maine Township, close to Apollo School.
Although the exact nature of the hazardous materials incident remains unclear, officials stated that air quality levels were normal and no unusual contaminants were found in the water supply. By Thursday evening, crews were permitted back into the building without full protective gear, though residents of three units in the same building were still restricted from entering their homes.
