Blood drive for firefighter’s daughter

Today in Highland Park

Here's a glimpse of what's happening in our community today, as shared by ChicagoTribune.com:

The City of Highland Park and the Highland Park Fire Department are coming together once again for a special Memorial Day blood drive. This year’s event is in support of Kylia Abbott, the young daughter of firefighter Nathan Abbott, who is currently battling stage four neuroblastoma—a rare and aggressive form of cancer that develops in nerve tissue.

Kylia was diagnosed after a routine check-up in January 2014. The disease affects areas like the adrenal glands, neck, chest, or spinal cord. Her treatment at the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital has been intense, requiring nearly 20 blood transfusions. The family has been incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from the fire department and their colleagues, many of whom have made personal sacrifices to help Nathan and his wife, Kelly, be there for Kylia during her treatments.

This marks the second consecutive year that the Highland Park Fire Department has organized a blood drive on Memorial Day to support Kylia. Nathan, a former U.S. Marine and Purple Heart recipient from Operation Iraqi Freedom, has always been a dedicated public servant—and now, his family is receiving the same kind of support he has given to others throughout his career.

Fire Chief Dan Pease said, “We’re in the business of service—both to the public and to each other. Helping a brother and his family during this difficult time is part of who we are.”

Kylia’s grandmother emphasized how critical blood donations have been in Kylia’s journey. “The blood transfusions were essential in keeping her strong while she waited for her stem cell transplant,” she said. “They helped her stay alert and gave her the strength to fight this battle.”

If you're interested in donating blood, appointments are encouraged but not required. You can schedule your donation by calling LifeSource at (877) 543-3768 or visiting www.lifesource.org using group code 344D.

Thanks, Dan
