When the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel was closed, he made the brave decision to run through it—carrying 60 pounds of equipment on his back. Tragically, he never made it out. His selflessness saved countless lives that day.
In honor of Stephen’s sacrifice, his family established the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. The organization supports veterans, first responders, and their families by building smart homes for injured service members, providing mortgage assistance to Gold Star families, and offering critical aid to those who have given their lives in service.
The foundation has helped numerous families in Lake, Cook, and McHenry counties, and is currently rated **four stars (the highest) by Charity Navigator**. Over 95% of every dollar raised goes directly toward programs, which is an improvement from last year’s 93%.
