The *Daily Herald* reported that the village of Rolling Meadows is considering the construction of two new fire stations as part of a long-discussed plan to improve emergency response times and address growing concerns over fire safety.
On Tuesday, the Rolling Meadows City Council made a preliminary decision with a 4-3 vote to build two new fire stations. The first step would involve relocating the downtown fire station to the east side of town, near New Wilke and Central roads. In the future, the second station would be moved from its current location at 2455 Plum Grove Road, west of Route 53, to a new site on Hicks Road between Kirchoff Road and Euclid Avenue.
Support for the move came from both residents and aldermen, particularly those concerned about the lack of adequate fire protection in multifamily homes along Algonquin Road. According to recent studies, this area is at higher risk for serious fires, and current response times often exceed the six-minute target. Improving coverage here has been a key priority for many in the community.
Mayor Tom Rooney publicly supported the plan but emphasized that if one station is relocated, the other must follow. He also noted that the city will only proceed if the narrow majority continues to hold in future votes. This caution reflects the political sensitivity surrounding the issue.
Several council members, including Prejna and Majikes, reported that many residents have voiced opposition to the new stations, largely due to the high cost—estimated to reach up to $10 million. Concerns about financial burden and potential tax increases have fueled public debate.
D’Astice, another council member, also raised objections, pointing out that much of the area with delayed response times falls within his ward. He suggested that instead of building new stations, the city should consider stationing an ambulance in the area to better handle emergency medical calls. He also proposed holding a referendum to let the public decide the matter.
For years, the city council has debated the future of its fire stations, but the deteriorating condition of Station 15 at 3111 Meadows Drive finally pushed them toward action. According to Franzgrote, the station requires at least $500,000 in renovations, and its outdated design no longer meets modern safety standards.
Franzgrote’s recommendation was based on a city-commissioned study and the council’s insistence on maintaining only two fire stations. Although New Wilke Road is located on the eastern edge of the city, it serves as a critical north-south corridor. Additionally, mutual aid agreements with nearby communities like Arlington Heights and Palatine were factored into the planning process.
This decision marks a significant step forward for Rolling Meadows, but it remains to be seen whether the plan will gain full approval and how the community will respond to the changes ahead.
