The *Daily Herald* reported that the village of Rolling Meadows is considering the construction of two new fire stations to better serve its residents. On Tuesday, the Rolling Meadows City Council made a preliminary decision with a 4-3 vote to build two new fire stations, starting with relocating the downtown station to the east side of town near New Wilke and Central roads. Eventually, the second station would be moved from its current location at 2455 Plum Grove Road, west of Route 53, to Hicks Road between Kirchoff Road and Euclid Avenue.
Support for the plan came from both residents and aldermen, especially those concerned about improving emergency response times in multifamily housing areas along Algonquin Road. According to studies, this area is at higher risk for serious fires, and current response times often exceed the desired six-minute window.
Mayor Tom Rooney supported the initiative but emphasized that if one station is relocated, the other must follow. He also noted that the plan will only move forward if the narrow majority holds in future votes.
Some residents, however, have voiced strong opposition to the project, primarily due to the high cost—estimated to reach up to $10 million. Aldermen Prejna and Majikes both received numerous calls from residents who were unhappy with the proposed changes.
D’Astice, another alderman, also raised concerns about the financial burden. He pointed out that much of the area with longer response times falls within his ward. He suggested that many of the calls are actually for ambulance services and proposed placing an ambulance in the area instead of building a new fire station. He also recommended that the issue should be put to a public referendum.
The city council has long debated the future of its fire stations, but recent discussions were accelerated by the deteriorating condition of Station 15 on Meadows Drive. The station requires at least $500,000 in renovations, and its outdated design makes it unsuitable for modern operations.
Franzgrote, who presented the recommendation, cited a city-commissioned study and the council’s decision to maintain only two fire stations. While New Wilke Road is on the eastern edge of the city, it serves as a key north-south route. Additionally, mutual aid agreements with neighboring cities like Arlington Heights and Palatine played a role in shaping the final recommendations.
Thanks, Dan.
