In February, the oil and chemical industry demonstrated a strong economic performance, according to a recent analysis report from the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association. The overall demand for oil and chemical products remained robust, with production and sales operating efficiently, achieving a 97.3% production and sales rate. Although the growth in production slightly declined, it showed a trend of "value decrease by volume," indicating that national macro-control policies are having a more noticeable impact.
Among the major basic inorganic chemical raw materials, prices continued to rise strongly, while organic chemical product prices generally declined. Fertilizer prices saw an accelerated increase, driven by rising production costs and higher demand for spring planting. Out of 174 tracked chemical products, 118 (67.82%) experienced year-on-year price increases, 53 (30.46%) remained stable, and only 3 (1.72%) saw a decline.
International crude oil and refined oil prices continued to rise, albeit at a slower pace. The average spot price of U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil reached $93.13 per barrel, up 58.86% year-on-year but down $1.37 from the previous month. Brent crude oil averaged $93.14 per barrel, a 63.24% annual increase. In China, Daqing crude oil was priced at $92.08 per barrel, up 63.15% year-on-year, while Shengli crude oil stood at $77.45 per barrel, up 62.06% year-on-year.
Fertilizer prices rose sharply, with the average price of 13 tracked chemical fertilizers increasing by 34% year-on-year. Key products like monoammonium phosphate (up 78.9%), diammonium phosphate (DAP, up 23.5%), and ammonium nitrate (up 50.3%) hit record highs. This surge could negatively impact spring farming activities.
Basic inorganic chemical products continued to see strong price increases, while organic chemical products faced broad declines. Sulfuric acid prices soared to 905 yuan per ton, up 126.3% year-on-year, while sulfur prices reached 4,240 yuan, up 220% year-on-year. Soda ash and caustic soda also hit record highs, while propylene and ethylene glycol showed mixed trends.
Market pressure is mounting due to rising energy and raw material costs, which are pushing up production expenses and squeezing profit margins. With international crude oil prices exceeding $100 per barrel, domestic coal, electricity, gas, and labor costs are also rising rapidly. At the same time, downstream industries are struggling to absorb these cost increases, as seen in the National Bureau of Statistics data showing a 6.1% year-on-year rise in industrial product ex-factory prices, compared to an 8.9% increase in raw material purchase prices.
Inorganic chemical products such as sulfur, calcium carbide, and yellow phosphorus have limited downstream absorption capacity, while organic chemicals like methanol, benzene, and PTA have seen price declines. This highlights the growing challenge for the chemical industry, where rising costs are difficult to pass on to consumers.
To address these challenges, companies should focus on internal improvements through structural adjustments, technological upgrades, and management innovations. By reducing raw material usage and energy consumption, they can lower production costs and enhance competitiveness in a highly competitive market.
