On the early morning of May 16, 2017, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District (LRFPD) firefighters were called to respond to a report of smoke in a home located at 20729 Eugene Avenue, which is in an unincorporated area of their jurisdiction. Upon arrival, crews discovered a haze inside the residence and visible smoke outside, likely caused by a lightning strike. At the scene, LRFPD units included Battalion 51, Truck 51, Engine 52, Engine 53, and Deputy Chief 5101. Additional support came from Buffalo Grove Engine 26, Ambulance 26, and Battalion 4, as well as Prospect Heights Engine 9 and Long Grove Chief 5500. Some other units had arrived but were held in staging before being dispatched.
The fire was small and contained, with no injuries reported. Firefighters worked quickly to assess the situation and ensure the home was safe. The lightning strike had caused damage to the structure, prompting crews to cut through the siding to check for any hidden flames or structural concerns. Several photos captured the scene, showing firefighters in full protective gear using hand tools and ground ladders. One image highlighted the distinctive Buffalo Grove FD Engine 26, an E-One Typhoon model, while another showed the aftermath of the lightning strike on the roof.
These images, taken by Larry Shapiro, provide a glimpse into the quick response and professionalism of the first responders. More photos from the incident can be viewed at Shapirophotography.net.
