The Courier-News recently published a story detailing ongoing discussions between the Carpentersville and West Dundee Fire Departments about merging their services. As these talks continue, local leaders are pushing forward to maintain progress and explore potential benefits of consolidation.
As part of this effort, the West Dundee Village Board approved a request for a proposal to assess the cost of a comprehensive study on consolidation. The goal is to get an outside expert involved, as West Dundee Village President Chris Nelson explained: “An independent entity can help evaluate the possibility of consolidation because it’s a complex issue.â€
The scope of the possible merger has expanded beyond just the two departments. Both the East Dundee Fire District and the Rutland-Dundee Township Fire Protection District have shown interest in working more closely with Carpentersville and West Dundee. Current efforts are focused on creating a more cooperative model—where fire districts remain separate but operate more efficiently together, sharing resources and responding to emergencies as a unified team.
West Dundee Fire Chief Randy Freise confirmed that Carpentersville has agreed to provide battalion chief coverage for all structure fires, vehicle accidents requiring extrication, and major incidents at Spring Hill Mall. Additionally, Freise plans to meet with East Dundee Fire Chief Steve Schmitendorf and Carpentersville Deputy Chief John Skillman to discuss the idea of sharing a training officer.
Nelson emphasized the importance of consistent training, noting that it not only reduces costs but also ensures that firefighters from different departments work well together. “This isn’t just about West Dundee—it’s about the other departments and the taxpayers too,†he said. “Our main goal is to improve service levels while keeping things affordable. It’s great to see real progress being made here.â€
