Large mulch fire in McCook, 12-28-13

The McCook Fire Department has been battling a large mulch fire since 8:00 AM at 5300 Lawndale. For most of the day, they relied on a tanker shuttle to supply water due to the lack of nearby hydrants. The fire is burning on the backside of a massive mulch pile, which is inaccessible by traditional means. Late this afternoon, the department released the tankers and called for a hose wagon (6-1-2) and a turret wagon (6-7-6) from Chicago. This marks the first known deployment of the new 6-7-6 unit, which is now on scene and actively working the fire. The arrival of these specialized units is expected to help bring the situation under control more quickly. Several firefighters have been working the incident throughout the day, and local residents have also been monitoring the situation. Photos submitted by Josh Boyajian and Tim Olk show the intensity of the fire and the efforts being made to contain it. More images are expected later tonight as the operation continues. This is an ongoing and extended response, with crews likely to remain on site for several more hours. Updates will follow as more information becomes available. Stay tuned for further developments.
