This is from Eric Haak:
With things being a bit quiet lately, I thought it would be nice to share some historical photos. These images capture one of the more memorable fires in the last 50 years. The 9-story abandoned Continental Grain Company Elevator, located at 32nd Place and Benson Street, stood on the east side of the South Branch of the Chicago River. Just after 7:00 pm on May 25, 1966, the building was engulfed in flames. Within 20 minutes, the fire had been escalated to a 5-11 with 4 Specials on scene. For those who were around back then, this fire is still vivid in their memory. But for younger generations, these images help bring an important part of our fire department’s history back into the spotlight. The photographer remains unknown, and these photos are part of my personal collection.

These photos offer a glimpse into a powerful moment in Chicago's past. Fires like this remind us of the bravery and dedication of firefighters who responded under challenging conditions. It's always interesting to see how the city has changed over the years, and these images serve as a reminder of what once stood where we now walk. If you have any stories or memories related to this fire, feel free to share them — they add depth to the history we're trying to preserve.
