Crash with entrapment in Prospect Heights, 3-21-23

Chief Drew Smith from the Prospect Heights Fire District shared an update on a recent incident:

On Tuesday, March 21, Prospect Heights fire crews responded to a multi-vehicle accident involving four cars on Elmhurst Road, north of Palatine Road. One of the vehicles was an SUV where the driver became trapped and required extrication. Local emergency services, including Wheeling and Des Plaines ambulances, provided valuable support during the operation. Two patients were transported in stable condition.

The initial challenge was that part of the pickup truck’s front end was blocking the SUV’s driver’s door. After careful assessment and some technical work, the door was successfully removed, allowing for a safe extraction of the patient. The team considered using the passenger side, but due to the vehicle's deformation and the presence of a center console, it wasn’t the best option. The decision to use the driver’s side proved to be the most effective approach.

This incident highlights the teamwork and quick thinking of our firefighters, who handled the situation with professionalism and care. A big thank you to all involved for their efforts in ensuring the safety of those affected.
