Commercial building fire in Des Plaines, 12/29/17

Des Plaines firefighters responded to a fire at the Car-X Muffler shop located at 1108 E. Oakton on December 29, 2017, around midday. The incident took place just half a mile from Des Plaines Station 62. Upon arrival, Engine 62 reported visible flames and immediately began an interior attack. Within minutes, fire was seen from two sides of the building and even through the roof. As the situation escalated, crews were ordered out for an exterior attack. Both Des Plaines tower ladders were deployed as the fire was upgraded to a working fire. The B-sector wall collapsed shortly after, causing part of the roof to come down with it. A MABAS Box Alarm was called in to bring in more resources. Park Ridge Tower Ladder 36 arrived at the rear of the building, providing a third elevated water stream supplied by a Rosemont engine. Several units were on scene, including Des Plaines Engines 61, 62, and 63, Towers 61 and 63, Ambulances 61, 62, and 63, and Battalion units 61, 6100, and 6101. Mutual aid included Park Ridge Tower 36 and Ambulance 36, Rosemont Engine 156, Glenview Engine 8, North Maine Engine 1, Elk Grove Township Engine 11, Schiller Park Tower 5 and Battalion 5, Morton Grove Quint 4, Skokie Tower 16, Northbrook Ambulance 10, Wheeling Ambulance 24, a warming bus from Mount Prospect, and Elk Grove Ambulance 7. Multiple eyewitnesses were on site, and this is the first in a series of updates. Several photos have been taken by Larry Shapiro, capturing the intensity of the fire and the heroic efforts of the responding units. More images can be viewed at Shapirophotography.net.
