Bradley Fire Department news

Excerpts from the daily-journal.com:

The mayor recently confirmed that Bradley is looking to make changes within the fire department following the departure of its interim fire chief. While the mayor outlined plans for improvement, he didn’t clarify who will be leading the department or how it will work with the neighboring Bourbonnais Fire Protection District. One possibility being discussed is temporarily placing Bourbonnais Fire Protection District Chief Ed St. Louis in charge of the Bradley department.

About six months ago, the village hired Jim Eggert as an interim fire chief for a six-month term, with the option to extend if a permanent chief hadn’t been found. The total cost for his six-month stint was $66,000. Eggert’s last day was Friday, but no replacement has been named yet. The mayor stated the decision not to renew his contract was due to financial concerns.

Throughout Tuesday, there was confusion over who was in charge of the Bradley Fire Department. At least one firefighter believed St. Louis had already taken over. However, Capt. Kevin Goudreau, the union president, and Capt. Greg Glidewell remained in charge until further notice. They are the highest-ranking members of the department. On Tuesday night, employees were set to meet with St. Louis and village officials. Goudreau suggested St. Louis might be appointed as the acting chief, possibly as part of a broader consolidation between the two departments.

The union isn’t against consolidation, but they feel caught off guard by the recent developments. Any merger would require approval from the village board. Currently, the department has six full-time staff and handles around 3,000 calls annually—nearly doubling since becoming a full-time department 15 years ago. For months, the union has been negotiating for a new contract after the previous one expired in April.

According to recommendations from the Illinois Firefighters Association, which reviewed the department in 2005, key improvements included increasing staffing levels, adding a second fire station, strengthening cooperation with other departments, and upgrading performance tracking software.

Local fire departments often assist each other during emergencies. Bradley, with its small team, relies heavily on support from Bourbonnais. However, Bourbonnais is seeking an agreement where it would handle all calls north of Armour Road—a region with more privately insured customers, which means higher reimbursements.

"We don’t want to hand over those calls because we’d lose revenue," Goudreau said. "It would be better if Bourbonnais supported us regardless of the area." This tension highlights the growing complexity of interdepartmental cooperation and the need for clear agreements moving forward."
