Chicago 3-11 Alarm fire, August 27, 2014 (part 1)

Chicago was called to a reported fire at a three-story building, with commercial spaces on the ground floor and vacant upper levels. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire in the basement and immediately requested the high-expansion foam unit. Before deploying it, all companies were ordered to evacuate the building and switch to a defensive strategy. A 2-11 alarm was initially called, followed shortly by a 3-11 alarm. Two tower ladders, Squad 5A (Snorkel), the reserve Snorkel (661), and one of the turret wagons (676) were deployed. Multiple hand lines and multi-versal units were also in operation throughout the incident. Several of our contributors were on-site and will be sharing multiple posts with photos and videos from the scene. It's clear this was a significant fire that required a large response. From CFD Media:
  • 6308 S Halsted – 3-11 alarm. Three-story building, 100x200 feet. CFD companies are working the fire.
  • CFD is in defensive mode, making progress. No transports at this time.
  • CFD continues to fight the fire on Halsted under a 3-11 alarm. No transports. CFD will remain on scene for an extended period. Updates will follow as they become available.
  • The incident commander will hold a media briefing in five minutes at the corner of 63rd and Halsted, near the scene of the 3-11 alarm.
  • 0305: The 3-11 alarm has been secured. No transports. CFD remains on scene to chase hot spots. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
There were several striking images captured from the scene, including a night-time view of the fire, a smoky backdrop with a fire engine in action, and a close-up of the Snorkel squad working on the incident.
