Asia's benzene production capacity will account for half of the world in 2012

Jens Nuhn of BASF Southeast Asia Company stated at the 3rd Asian aromatics annual meeting held in Singapore that Asia will continue to strengthen its leading position in global benzene production capacity. It is expected that by the end of 2012, benzene production capacity in Asia will be global. The proportion of benzene production capacity will increase from 40% in 2007 to about 50%.

It is reported that by 2012, the benzene production capacity in Asia (excluding the Middle East) will increase from approximately 18 million tons/year in 2007 to more than 25 million tons/year. Demand for benzene in Asia will also increase from 17.5 million tons/year in 2007 to 24 million tons/year in 2012.

According to Nunn, the new benzene production capacity in Asia in the next few years will be mainly concentrated in China. It is expected that the supply and demand of China's domestic benzene market will be in balance until 2009-2010. By 2010, China's benzene production capacity will increase significantly from approximately 4.3 million tons/year in 2007 to 9 million tons/year.
