**World’s Most Advanced Fireboat Headed to Houston**
HOUSTON — A two-week journey through four Great Lakes and the Mississippi River will bring the first of three high-performance fireboats to the Port of Houston. These vessels are set to replace the current fleet and provide the most advanced firefighting capabilities in the world.
“Being the busiest port in terms of foreign tonnage and home to one of the largest petrochemical complexes, our firefighters play a critical role in protecting this vital national asset,†said Len Waterworth, Executive Director of the Port Authority. “These new boats will enhance their ability to protect lives and property along the 25-mile-long Houston Ship Channel.â€
The five-person crew includes three members from the Port of Houston Fire Department. They will navigate the Firestorm 70 through Lake Ontario and Lake Erie to Detroit on May 22, then across Lake Huron and Lake Michigan to Chicago on May 25. The journey continues down the Cumberland River to Lockport, Illinois, then the Illinois River to St. Louis, Missouri, before heading down the Mississippi River with several stops including Cape Girardeau, Memphis, Greenville, and Baton Rouge. A final stop in Galveston, Texas, will precede the arrival in Houston around June 1, 2013.
The crew includes Senior Captain Glenn Hood, a 14-year veteran of the fire department, and Engine Operators Robert Lacour and Vic Vasquez, both with 10 years of experience. All team members are highly trained and certified in marine, structural, hazardous materials, and emergency medical response.
The Firestorm 70 is a state-of-the-art vessel built by MetalCraft Marine. It features quad diesel engines that allow a top speed of 45 knots—far faster than the current fleet's 14–16 knots. This increased speed is crucial for rapid response along the extensive Houston Ship Channel.
Designed as both a command center and a rescue vessel, the Firestorm 70 can stay on station for extended periods. It includes berths for the crew, space for injured individuals, and advanced firefighting systems capable of pumping up to 17,000 gallons per minute at 130 psi. This is three times the discharge rate of the existing boats.
Funded largely through federal grants, the new fireboats are replacing three aging vessels from 1973 and 1983. MetalCraft Marine, a leader in custom high-performance boats, spent over 20,000 hours building the Firestorm 70 under the guidance of Project Manager Jay Milner and Design Manager Ryan Hunter.
For those interested in following the voyage, the Port of Houston Authority shares updates on Facebook and Twitter. The ship will be piloted by Captain Ron Peddle, an experienced mariner and owner of MetalCraft Marine.
