PHFD Mourns Loss of Former Deputy Chief Ron Olsen

From the Prospect Heights Fire District website: Ron Olsen, a former deputy chief of the Prospect Heights Fire District and father of Battalion Chief Scott Olsen, passed away on Wednesday, November 8. He was 79 years old. Ron began his service with the PHFD in 1962 and spent over 26 years with the department before retiring as deputy chief in 1988. After retirement, he continued to contribute by working part-time as a fire inspector until 2015. His dedication to the community never wavered, even after he stepped down from active duty. During the early 1970s, when the original fire station underwent its first major expansion, Ron played a key role in the masonry work and other essential details. In the 2000s, he again lent his expertise by helping with two major masonry repairs at the station, which saved the district both time and money. Ron's commitment to the Prospect Heights Fire District and the people of the community was truly invaluable. His legacy will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him. Ronald J. Olsen was born on October 24, 1938, in Chicago to Harry and Bertha (Torkilsen) Olsen. He was a lifelong resident of Prospect Heights and later moved to Grayslake. A dedicated member of the D.C. Crieger Masonic Lodge #81 AF & AM for over 50 years, Ron also served as a Past Patron of the Arlington Heights Chapter of the Eastern Star. He was married to Lorraine L. (Weiss) Olsen for many years and is survived by their children: Kimberly Christensen (Richard), Scott Olsen (Georgette), and Brigette Miksch (Daniel). He was also a proud grandfather to many grandchildren and a beloved brother to several siblings. A visitation will be held on Friday, November 10, 2017, from 3 PM to 9 PM at Lauterburg & Oehler Funeral Home, located at 2000 E. Northwest Highway in Arlington Heights. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, November 11, at 10:30 AM. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society are suggested. This photo shows Ron Olsen, then a deputy chief, demonstrating CPR during an early training session. It’s a reminder of his long-standing commitment to public safety and education.
