NICT develops small ion pump

The Kobe Advanced ICT Research Center of the Nanotechnology Division of the Japan Information and Communication Research Institute (NICT) has developed an ion pump with a volume and weight of only about 1/10 of that of conventional products.

The size of the ion pump is 100 mm in diameter x 200 mm in length and weighs 1.3 kg. It is envisaged for use in electron microscopes and small vacuum equipment that can handle high vacuum environments of 10-8 to 10-9 Torr (10-6 to 10-7 Pa).

In addition to the ion pump, NICT has also developed a vacuum device that can carry a sample with a side length of 10 mm in a sample container with a side length of 20 mm. The vacuum equipment consists of an ion pump, a power supply, a sample container, and a gate valve that connects to a large vacuum chamber.

When the ion pump is placed in a suitcase filled with cushioning material, the total weight is about 6kg. The small ion pump was demonstrated at the "nano tech 2007 International Nanotechnology Exhibition Technical Conference". NICT said it will strive to sell the ion pump and vacuum equipment developed this time.

Working with 4 No. 5 dry batteries

In order to meet the needs of carrying, this vacuum pump reduces the power consumption while miniaturizing. It can work continuously for 20 hours using 4 No. 5 dry batteries. In the past, the ion pump was usually driven by a lead storage battery for automobiles during transportation. Since the total weight is too large, it can only be handled by a trailer. Therefore, it is necessary to use a device such as a damper that can absorb shocks, and it is very difficult to carry it.

The ion pump uses a material that is lighter than the stainless steel commonly used in vacuum pumps and has improved the electrode structure, thus achieving miniaturization and energy saving. A typical ion pump employs a structure in which two negative electrodes sandwich a cylindrical positive electrode. This time, the ion pump "is made possible by miniaturization and low-voltage, low-current driving by changing the electrode structure from the conventional two-dimensional to three-dimensional"
