Fortron built the world's largest polyphenylene sulfide plant

Celanese Corporation of the United States recently announced that Fortron Industrial Co., Ltd., a joint venture of Ticona Engineering Plastics and Wuhan Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., will be based in Wilmington, North Carolina. The production capacity of Fortron linear polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) units has expanded to 15,000 tons/year, making it the world's largest PPS plant.

Fred Daniel, president of Fortron Industries, stated that the company celebrated the 20th anniversary of the launch of the Fortron brand by expanding production, as well as the introduction of several new PPS products. Expansion will help maintain the company’s leading position in the industry and meet the growing demand for PPS in the global power, electronics, automotive, aerospace, textile, filtration and other industries.

According to reports, the expansion facility uses the advanced environment-friendly "integration" process of Wu Yu.

PPS is a high-performance material for demanding applications. It has excellent resistance to chemicals, heat resistance, hardness, rigidity and dimensional stability, while having low creep and low water absorption, and is generally used as a substitute for metals and thermosetting plastics. Its applications include automotive pumps, valves, electric trains, electronic connectors, plugs, switches, circuit boards, structural and non-structural aircraft components, heater grilles, impellers, conveyor belts, power tools, microwave components, and more.

Wu Yu Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. is a diversified chemical manufacturer, producing chemical products and plastics in Japan, China, the Netherlands, and Fortron industrial joint ventures based in the United States. Its sales in 2006 were 146 billion yen.

Ticona is a company engaged in the engineering plastics business of Celanese. It produces and markets a variety of engineering plastics products. With sales of US$915 million in 2006, Ticona has production, compounding and research facilities in the United States, Germany and Brazil.

The Celanese Corporation, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, reported sales of $6.7 billion in 2006. About 60% of its revenue comes from North America, with 8,900 employees.
