Bradley Fire Department news

Excerpts from the daily-journal.com:

The mayor recently announced that Bradley is looking to make some changes within the fire department following the departure of its interim fire chief. However, the mayor didn’t provide clarity on who will be leading the department or how it will work with the neighboring Bourbonnais Fire Protection District. One potential move under discussion is appointing Bourbonnais Fire Protection District Chief Ed St. Louis as the temporary head of the Bradley department.

About six months ago, the village hired Jim Eggert as an interim fire chief for a six-month term, with the possibility of extending it if they hadn’t found a permanent replacement. The cost of his six-month tenure was $66,000. Eggert’s last day was Friday, but no new chief has been named yet. According to the mayor, the decision not to renew his contract was based on financial concerns.

Throughout Tuesday, there was confusion about who was in charge of the Bradley Fire Department. At least one firefighter believed that St. Louis had already taken over. However, Capt. Kevin Goudreau, the union president, and Capt. Greg Glidewell remained in command until further notice. They are the highest-ranking members of the department. On Tuesday night, department staff were scheduled to meet with St. Louis and local officials. Goudreau suggested that St. Louis could be appointed as the temporary chief, possibly signaling a broader effort to merge the two departments.

While the union isn’t against consolidation, they feel caught off guard by the recent developments. Any merger between the departments would require approval from the village board. Currently, the department has six full-time employees and handles around 3,000 calls annually—nearly doubling since it became a full-time department 15 years ago. For months, the union has been negotiating for a new contract after the previous one expired on April 30.

In 2005, the Illinois Firefighters Association conducted an assessment of the department and recommended several key improvements, including a significant increase in staffing, the addition of a second fire station, closer collaboration with other departments, and better performance-tracking software.

Local fire departments often assist each other during emergencies. Given Bradley’s small staff, it relies heavily on support from Bourbonnais. However, Bourbonnais is pushing for an agreement where it would handle all calls north of Armour Road, which tend to involve more privately insured customers and higher reimbursement rates.

"We don’t want to give up those calls because we’d lose revenue," Goudreau said. "It would be better if Bourbonnais supported us regardless of the area."

Thanks, Dennis
