The Chicago Tribune has updated its report on last night’s incident involving a barricaded suspect and the injury of a police officer, adding details about the immediate assistance provided by Arlington Heights Deputy Fire Chief Ken Koeppen and local officers to the wounded officer before paramedics arrived.
According to officials, Deputy Fire Chief Ken Koeppen played a crucial role in saving the life of Officer Michael McEvoy, who was shot in the chin while responding to a call about a man threatening his ex-girlfriend with a gun. Koeppen, who was visiting the 1900 block of Windham Court at the time, rushed to help when he saw flashing lights. “I was eating dinner with my father-in-law when I saw the lights. I went out to help,†he said. “I just gave them a hand.â€
Koeppen described how he worked to stabilize the officer and control the bleeding until emergency services arrived. “I applied pressure to the wound and kept the bleeding under control,†he told WGN-TV. “The police did an amazing job.†Cmdr. Andrew Whowell praised Koeppen’s actions, calling it “an act of God†that he was nearby. “He was definitely an integral part in saving the officer’s life,†Whowell said.
“Ken Koeppen was a true hero in this situation,†the commander added. McEvoy, a 52-year-old veteran of the department with 24 years of service, was among three officers responding to a call from a woman who reported that a man, later identified as Eric M. Anderson, had shown up at her home despite a protection order issued earlier that week. The woman had since fled to a neighbor’s house, and Anderson was holding her daughter inside the residence.
McEvoy was the first to enter the home and was shot in the chin. Two other officers helped pull him to safety, and that’s when Koeppen arrived to provide critical care. McEvoy was then transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.
Meanwhile, dozens of officers surrounded the area as they attempted to negotiate with Anderson. According to Whowell, officers even shot out streetlights for tactical reasons. Around 10:30 p.m., Anderson forced his ex-girlfriend into an attached garage. When officers confronted him, he pointed a gun at them, prompting the woman to flee. Officers returned fire and struck Anderson multiple times.
“He pointed a gun at them. That was the point of no return,†Whowell said. Anderson, 41, was taken to Northwest Community Hospital and later pronounced dead at 11:02 p.m. by the Cook County medical examiner.
McEvoy is expected to make a full recovery, according to Whowell. “It didn’t hit anything vital, even though he lost a lot of blood,†he said. McEvoy is a patrol officer and forensic technician. He is not married, and his family has requested privacy, Whowell noted.
Whowell also mentioned that there had been no prior incidents involving Anderson at the Arlington Heights address, and that the department had not encountered him before. However, on Monday, a McHenry County judge issued an emergency order of protection against Anderson after the 39-year-old woman accused him of harassment and following her. The order listed her home address in Crystal Lake.
In her petition, the woman described how Anderson continued to bother her with calls and emails, even after she broke up with him on November 25. She claimed he sent money to her workplace and wrote her an apology card, which she said she did not trust. At one point, he approached her car at a stoplight and punched her rolled-up window. When she returned home, he was waiting for her, knowing details about her recent movements.
She called the police, who reportedly warned Anderson not to bother her again. But he continued to contact her, even threatening to show up at her office. Despite another warning, he ignored it. The woman was later arrested, and court records show that Anderson was charged with two misdemeanor counts of electronic harassment. He was released on bond shortly after his arrest.
McHenry County prosecutors were unavailable for comment, and a hearing for the protection order was scheduled for December 23.
